When Everything Feels Like Too Much

By Caroline Davis, Inner Freedom EFT

There are moments when everything feels louder.

A small request feels overwhelming.
An email feels urgent.
A conversation replays in your mind long after it ends.

Your chest feels tight.
Your thoughts speed up.
You can’t quite relax.

And somewhere in the middle of it, a thought might appear:

Why am I so sensitive?
Other people seem to handle this.
Something must be wrong with me.

But what’s happening in these moments isn’t weakness.

It’s activation.

When your nervous system senses pressure — even subtle pressure — it can shift into a mobilized stress response. Sometimes this is called fight-or-flight, or hyperarousal.

Everything feels faster. Louder. More urgent.

Your body is trying to protect you.

When you’re in that state, the mind scans for what’s wrong. It looks for what needs fixing.

Sometimes it lands on the situation.
Sometimes it lands on you.

That doesn’t mean it’s telling the truth.

Sensitivity is not a flaw. It’s a nervous system that detects and responds quickly. When you’re activated, that sensitivity gets amplified — including self-doubt.

And because this response lives in the body, it can be supported through the body.

You’re not broken.
You’re mobilized.

Logic rarely calms a mobilized system.
Reasoning doesn’t slow a racing body.

Regulation does.

The goal isn’t to never feel activated.
The goal is to recognize it sooner — and support your system back toward steadiness.

And sometimes activation makes sense. You may be carrying a lot right now. Regulation isn’t about pretending things aren’t hard. It’s about giving your nervous system steadiness while you move through them.

Here’s a simple practice you can use when things feel like too much.

A Touch & Breath Grounding Practice

This is not about fixing the feeling.

It’s about supporting yourself through it.

There’s no right way to do this — just do what feels supportive for you.

Step 1 — Notice

Pause.

What emotion or sensation feels strongest right now?

Anxiety?
Pressure?
Tightness?
Overwhelm?

Where do you feel it in your body?

Just notice. No need to change it.

Step 2 — Side of Hand (Setup Statements)

Gently press the side of your hand.

Take one slow breath.

Repeat each statement softly:

Even though I feel [emotion/sensation], it’s okay to feel this way.

Even though it feels like too much right now, I’m open to accepting how I feel.

Even though I feel this [emotion] in my [body area], I choose to support myself through it.

Step 3 — Touch & Breathe Through the Points

Move gently through the tapping points.

At each point:

Light touch.
One slow breath — inhale for 6, exhale for 6.

Simply allow the sensation or emotion to be there as you focus on your breath.

Step 4 — Recheck

After you’ve moved through all the points, pause.

Notice:

Has anything shifted, even slightly?

Is it 5% softer?
1% steadier?

If there’s still intensity there, return to pressing the side of the hand point and say:

Even though there is still this remaining [feeling/sensation], I’m okay right here and now.

Then pause again and notice what you’re experiencing now.
It might feel softer, steadier, or simply more aware.
Any shift is meaningful.

Soothing your nervous system is not avoidance.
It’s how steadiness is built.

Strength is not the absence of activation.
It’s learning how to return.

If overwhelm has been feeling loud or frequent lately, that may be a sign your nervous system needs more consistent support.

Soothing your system isn’t small work. It’s foundational.

And even small moments of steadiness begin to build trust.

You don’t have to do it perfectly.
You just have to begin.

With steadiness,
Caroline
