I Know Why I Do This… So Why Am I Still Doing It?

By Caroline Davis, Inner Freedom EFT

Many thoughtful people reach a point in their personal growth where they understand themselves quite well.

They can see their patterns.

They know why certain situations trigger stress or emotional reactions.

They may even recognize what past experiences shaped those responses.

And yet…

The reaction still happens.

You might notice yourself thinking:

“I know why I do this.”
“So why am I still doing it?”

If you’ve ever asked yourself that question, you’re not alone.

And it doesn’t mean your insight hasn’t been valuable.

Understanding yourself is an important step.

But understanding alone doesn’t always shift how the body responds in the moment.

When Understanding Meets the Nervous System

When something feels stressful or threatening, the body reacts quickly.

This response happens through the nervous system — often before the thinking part of the mind has time to weigh in.

That’s why you might notice a reaction even when you understand the situation differently.

Your mind may say:

“I know this pattern.”

But your body is responding to something deeper and more automatic.

This isn’t a failure of insight.

It’s simply how human physiology works.

The nervous system learns through experience, and it takes time — and the right conditions — for those responses to shift.

Why Insight Still Matters

Insight is not wasted.

Understanding your patterns often creates the first opening for change.

It helps you recognize what’s happening and become curious about your reactions instead of completely swept away by them.

But real change usually involves more than understanding.

It often requires helping the nervous system feel safe enough to respond differently.

This is one of the reasons I work with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), a practice that combines gentle nervous-system regulation with supportive self-acceptance.

Over time, this kind of work can help the body process experiences differently so new responses become possible.

A Different Way to Think About Change

If you’ve done a lot of personal reflection and still find yourself repeating certain reactions, it can feel like you’re stuck.

You’re not alone in that experience.

Often it simply means the pattern lives deeper than insight alone can reach.

Real change often happens when understanding is paired with experiences that help the nervous system feel safer and more supported.

When that happens, patterns rarely disappear overnight.

Instead you may notice something more subtle.

You pause a little sooner.

Recover a little faster.

Respond a little differently.

Those small shifts are often the beginning of deeper change.

Not because you forced yourself to be different, but because your system is beginning to experience something new.

And when the nervous system starts to feel safer, new responses gradually become possible.

Next week, I’ll share a little more about why understanding alone doesn’t always calm the body — and what helps create the conditions for real change.

With steadiness,
Caroline
