There are moments when your mind just won’t stop.
The thoughts keep coming.
Circling. Repeating.
Anxious thoughts or feelings begin to build…
and it becomes harder to settle.
You might try to think your way out of it.
To find the right answer.
To make the thoughts quiet down.
But it doesn’t really work.
Instead, the thoughts keep looping.
And it can feel like you’re stuck inside your own mind.
What’s Happening in These Moments
When this happens, it’s not just “overthinking.”
Something in your system has become activated.
Even if nothing obvious is happening around you…
your body may be responding as if something needs attention.
And your mind is trying to help.
Trying to understand what’s going on.
Trying to find resolution.
Trying to create a sense of safety.
Why This Can Feel So Intense
As the thoughts continue, your attention can start to narrow.
You may notice:
• your body feeling tighter
• your breath becoming shallower
• your focus pulling more deeply into the thoughts
Everything starts to revolve around what your mind is trying to solve.
Even if the thoughts aren’t leading anywhere.
Even if they’re repeating the same thing over and over.
When Trying to Stop It Makes It Harder
At some point, you might start trying to make it stop.
To push the thoughts away.
To “snap out of it.”
To force your mind to settle.
But that effort can sometimes make things feel even more tense.
Because your system is already activated.
And when there’s pressure to change what’s happening…
it can add another layer of activation on top.
A Small Way to Begin Creating Space
If you find yourself in this kind of loop, you might try something simple.
Pause for a moment.
Instead of following the thoughts, gently bring your attention to your body.
Notice:
• your breath
• where you feel tension
• any sense of pressure or tightness
You might not notice much at first.
Or you might notice quite a lot.
Either way is okay.
You don’t need to change anything.
Just noticing… without trying to fix it…
can begin to create a little space.
A Different Way to Relate to It
When your mind won’t stop, it can feel overwhelming.
And it can be easy to assume something is wrong.
But something important is happening underneath it.
Your system is trying to respond to something.
Even if it doesn’t feel helpful.
Even if it feels like too much.
You don’t need to get out of it all at once.
Even a small moment of awareness…
a small shift in where your attention goes…
can begin to change how it feels.
With care,
Caroline
