When It Feels Like You’re Back Where You Started

By Caroline Davis, Inner Freedom EFT

When One Difficult Moment Changes Everything

Have you ever had one difficult day that made you wonder if you’d lost all your progress?

Maybe an old pattern showed up.

Maybe you reacted in a way you wish you hadn’t.

Maybe anxious thoughts returned after things had been feeling a little easier.

Or maybe one difficult conversation left you wondering,

“Am I back where I started?”

What’s especially confusing is that things may have actually been looking up.

Perhaps you’d had a few more good days.

You’d been feeling a little lighter.

A little more hopeful.

Maybe you’d even found yourself thinking,

“I think I’m finally making some progress.”

Then one difficult moment suddenly feels more convincing than everything that came before it.

I’ve been wondering why that happens.

Why does one hard day sometimes seem to outweigh so many quieter moments of growth?

The Story One Difficult Moment Can Tell

When something difficult happens, it’s natural to notice it.

In fact, our brains are wired to pay close attention to experiences that feel painful, stressful, or threatening. Psychologists often refer to this tendency as negativity bias—our minds naturally give more weight to what feels wrong than to what feels safe or ordinary.

That ability helped our ancestors survive.

But it can also make one difficult day feel like the whole story.

It’s easy to think,

“I haven’t really changed.”

“I thought I was doing better.”

“Maybe I’m right back where I started.”

I’ve been wondering whether we sometimes mistake one difficult moment for the entire picture.

What Are We Using to Measure Healing?

One of the things I’ve become increasingly curious about is how we decide whether we’re making progress.

Many of us quietly measure healing by questions like:

Did I stay calm?

Did I react?

Did I get anxious again?

Did I handle this perfectly?

When the answer isn’t what we’d hoped, it’s easy to conclude that we’ve somehow gone backwards.

But what if one difficult moment doesn’t tell the whole story?

Not because it doesn’t matter.

It does.

But perhaps it isn’t the only thing that matters.

Maybe healing isn’t reflected only in whether difficult moments still happen.

Maybe it’s also reflected in how we treat ourselves when difficult moments arise.

Perhaps it looks like noticing the reaction sooner.

Offering yourself a little more understanding.

Or reaching for support instead of facing it alone.

Those moments may seem small.

But perhaps they tell a different story than we usually notice.

This Week’s Inner Freedom Practice

Reading about something is one thing.

Experiencing it is another.

This week, we’ll gently explore what happens after one of those moments that makes us wonder if we’ve somehow gone backwards.

Rather than trying to convince ourselves that everything is okay, we’ll simply notice the story that arises—and become curious about what else healing might look like.

This week, notice what your mind naturally uses as evidence that you’re making progress—or not.

Then gently ask yourself:

What else might healing look like this week… even with those difficult moments?

Maybe it looks like noticing your reaction.

Maybe it looks like asking for support.

Maybe it looks like taking a few minutes to tap.

Maybe it looks like offering yourself a little more kindness than you would have before.

There isn’t one right answer.

Just an invitation to become curious about what healing might already look like in your own life.

With care,

Caroline
