When You’re Hard on Yourself for Struggling

By Caroline Davis, Inner Freedom EFT

Anxious thoughts or feelings can feel intense on their own.

But often, something else follows right behind them.

A second layer.

You might notice thoughts like:

“Why am I like this?”
“I should be able to handle this.”
“What’s wrong with me?”

The moment things feel difficult…
the judgment begins.

The Second Layer

This self-criticism can feel automatic.

Almost like a reflex.

Anxious thoughts or feelings arise…
and the response is immediate.

Pressure.
Frustration.
Disappointment.

Why This Happens

This response isn’t random.

In many cases, self-criticism develops as a way to:

• try to stay in control
• push yourself to “do better”
• prevent future discomfort

At some point, it may have felt useful.

Even protective.

When It Starts to Work Against You

The intention behind it may be to help.

But the effect is often the opposite.

Instead of creating safety…
it adds pressure.

Instead of helping your system settle…
it keeps things activated.

And what was already difficult…
begins to feel heavier.

A Small Way to Shift Your Response

When you notice self-critical thoughts starting…

you might try something different.

Pause for a moment.

Instead of engaging with the criticism, gently notice it.

You might even name it:

“Judgment is here.”
“Something in me is being hard on myself.”

Then ask, softly:

“What do I need right now?”

A Gentle Practice

You don’t need to answer that question perfectly.

Even recognizing that something in you is struggling…

can begin to shift the tone.

You might notice a small softening.

A little more space.

A slightly different response.

When the Inner Voice Begins to Change

Anxious thoughts or feelings are one layer.

The way you respond to yourself is another.

And when that second layer begins to soften…

everything can feel just a little more manageable.

Not all at once.

But enough to create space.
