Have you ever found yourself thinking:
“I thought I’d be farther along by now.”
Maybe you’ve spent years “working on yourself.”
Maybe you’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, practiced meditation, tried tapping, or spent time reflecting on patterns you would like to change.
And yet something still gets activated.
The anxious thoughts return.
A familiar emotional reaction appears.
A difficult feeling resurfaces.
And part of you wonders:
“Why is this still affecting me?”
If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone.
Many of us carry an expectation that growth and healing should move in a straight line.
We imagine that once we’ve learned enough, understood enough, or worked on ourselves long enough, difficult emotions and old patterns should simply disappear.
But life rarely unfolds that way.
When Healing Doesn’t Feel Linear
One of the most surprising things about personal growth is that we often revisit familiar experiences.
An old fear resurfaces.
A familiar reaction appears in a new situation.
A feeling we thought we had worked through suddenly seems close again.
When this happens, it’s easy to assume we’ve gone backwards.
But often something else is happening.
Growth and healing tend to unfold in layers.
Sometimes we revisit the same experience with a little more awareness.
Sometimes we recognize what is happening sooner.
Sometimes we recover more quickly.
And sometimes we simply relate to ourselves more kindly while it is happening.
The experience itself may feel familiar.
But our relationship with it may be changing.
And that matters.
The Pressure to Be Finished
Many people unknowingly turn healing into another project.
Something to complete.
Something to get right.
Something to finally cross off the list.
Underneath this is often an unspoken belief:
“Once I heal enough, then I’ll be okay.”
It’s an understandable belief.
When we’re struggling, of course we want relief.
But this mindset can create a tremendous amount of pressure.
Instead of noticing the progress we’ve made, we focus on what still remains.
Instead of appreciating how far we’ve come, we compare ourselves to an imagined future version of ourselves who has everything figured out.
The finish line keeps moving.
And no matter how much growth has occurred, it can still feel like we’re not there yet.
What If You’re Not Behind?
Perhaps the question isn’t whether you’re behind, but how you’re measuring progress.
What if the fact that you’re noticing the pattern is part of the progress?
What if the fact that you’re aware of your reactions is part of the progress?
What if the fact that you’re reading this right now is part of the progress?
Sometimes we measure healing by the absence of difficulty.
But another way to measure it is by the way we relate to difficulty.
Can we stay present a little longer?
Can we recover a little more gently?
Can we offer ourselves compassion where we once offered criticism?
Can we remember that difficult moments do not erase the growth that has already occurred?
These shifts may seem small.
Yet they often represent meaningful change.
Healing isn’t always about becoming someone different.
Sometimes it’s about reconnecting with who you already are beneath the fear, pressure, self-judgment, and old patterns.
When Compassion Matters More Than Effort
When difficult emotions or familiar patterns reappear, many people assume they need to work harder, analyze more, or figure out what they’re doing wrong.
But often what is needed isn’t more self-criticism or more effort.
Sometimes what helps most is creating a little more safety, compassion, and space for what is already here.
This is one reason I find EFT tapping so powerful.
Many of us have spent years trying to think our way through difficult emotions, anxious thoughts, or repeating patterns.
EFT offers a gentler approach.
By combining focused attention with tapping on acupressure points, we can acknowledge what we’re feeling while also helping the nervous system settle.
From there, it often becomes easier to access the compassion, clarity, and inner wisdom that may have felt out of reach before.
Rather than forcing change, EFT helps create the conditions where change can unfold more naturally.
A Gentle EFT Practice
If you’ve been feeling frustrated with where you are on your journey, you might try a few rounds of EFT tapping. Tapping is a way to acknowledge the truth of what you’re feeling, offer yourself compassion, and send your body a calming signal.
If you’re new to EFT tapping, simply tap gently on each point while repeating the phrases below.
Tap on the side of the hand, saying:
“Even though part of me feels frustrated that I’m not farther along, and I feel it in my [place in your body where you feel it], I choose to have compassion for myself.”
“Even though I thought I would be farther along by now, I wonder if I can acknowledge the progress I’ve already made.”
“Even though part of me wishes I could be finished with this already, I choose to breathe in compassion and breathe out frustration.”
Now tap through the points, taking a slow breath at each point:
• “I thought I’d be farther along.” (top of the head)
• “This feels discouraging sometimes.” (eyebrow point)
• “Part of me is tired and wants to be finished.” (side of the eye)
• “I feel [emotion] in my [part of body].” (under the eye)
• “Maybe I don’t have to heal everything today.” (under the nose)
• “It’s okay to feel what I’m feeling, and it makes sense.” (under the chin)
• “Maybe I can meet myself where I am.” (collarbone point)
• “Breathing in peace and breathing out frustration.” (under the arm)
Remember, you don’t need to make anything happen.
You don’t need to force yourself to feel better, find the lesson, or figure out the next step.
For now, simply notice what it’s like to offer yourself a little more compassion exactly where you are.
Healing often unfolds one step, one insight, and one moment of awareness at a time.
And sometimes the greatest shift isn’t that the feeling disappears.
It’s that you discover you can meet yourself with a little more kindness while it’s here.
What If You’re Closer Than You Think?
Growth, healing, and self-discovery are rarely completed in a single moment.
Life continues to unfold.
New experiences arise.
New opportunities for learning and healing appear.
That doesn’t mean you’re failing.
And it doesn’t mean you’re behind.
Perhaps the goal isn’t to become a perfect future version of yourself.
Perhaps it’s to recognize that you are worthy of compassion and acceptance right now, even as you continue to grow.
You don’t have to heal everything today.
You don’t have to be finished before you can experience moments of peace.
And you don’t have to arrive somewhere else before appreciating how far you’ve already come.
Perhaps you’ve come farther than you realize.
With care,
