What Might Change If You Treated Yourself More Gently?

By Caroline Davis, Inner Freedom EFT

Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored some common experiences that can arise on a healing journey.

The discouragement that comes when progress feels slower than expected.

The resistance that shows up when difficult emotions arise.

The exhaustion that can develop from carrying something for a long time.

And the pressure we sometimes place on ourselves when things aren’t changing as quickly as we’d hoped.

Simply noticing these patterns can be an important step.

But eventually another question begins to emerge:

What do I want instead?

Many of us become very familiar with what we don’t want to feel.

Less familiar with what we’d like to experience in its place.

If you’ve spent years responding to struggle with pressure, self-criticism, or striving, it can be surprisingly difficult to imagine another way.

Not because you don’t want kindness.

But because the familiar pattern has become automatic.

Imagining Something Different

Imagine a situation that would normally trigger self-criticism.

A mistake.

A setback.

A difficult conversation.

A day when things don’t go according to plan.

What would your usual response be?

Would you criticize yourself?

Pressure yourself?

Tell yourself you should be doing better?

Try to fix it immediately?

Many of us know these reactions well.

They’re familiar.

Predictable.

Almost automatic.

But what if there were another possibility?

What if, in that same situation, you responded with a little more understanding?

A little more patience?

A little more kindness?

Not perfectly.

Not all at once.

Just a little differently.

What might change?

Why This Can Feel Difficult

One reason kindness can feel unfamiliar is that many of us have spent years believing that pressure creates change.

We may worry that if we’re kinder to ourselves, we’ll become complacent.

We’ll stop growing.

We’ll stop trying.

But kindness and giving up are not the same thing.

In fact, kindness often allows us to stay present with challenges that criticism only makes harder to face.

When we feel supported, we often have greater access to resilience, creativity, and problem-solving.

We may recover more quickly from setbacks.

We may become less afraid of mistakes.

We may find ourselves moving forward with a little more steadiness and a little less struggle.

Not because life becomes easier.

But because we’re no longer fighting ourselves quite so much.

A Gentle EFT Practice

Take a moment to think of a situation where you would normally respond with self-criticism, pressure, or frustration.

As you imagine that situation, ask yourself:

How possible does it feel that you could respond with kindness instead?

Give it a number between 0% and 100%.

There is no right answer.

Simply notice where you are starting.

If you’re new to EFT tapping, gently tap on each point while repeating the phrases below.

Begin by tapping on the side of the hand:

“Even though I would usually criticize myself in this situation, I choose to imagine a kinder response.”

“Even though I would normally put pressure on myself, I choose to experiment with support.”

“Even though this feels unfamiliar, I choose to become curious about what’s possible.”

Now tap through the points, taking a slow breath at each point:

• “I would usually criticize myself.” (top of head)

• “I choose to respond with understanding.” (eyebrow point)

• “I would normally put pressure on myself.” (side of eye)

• “I choose to offer myself support.” (under eye)

• “I would usually focus on what went wrong.” (under nose)

• “I choose to notice what I need right now.” (under chin)

• “I would normally be hard on myself.” (collarbone point)

• “I choose to imagine a gentler way.” (under arm)

Take a breath.

Now imagine that situation again.

This time, picture yourself responding with a little more kindness.

Notice what you see.

Notice what you hear.

Notice what you feel.

What feels different?

Does your body feel any lighter?

More spacious?

More settled?

How possible does this feel now?

Give it another number between 0% and 100%.

Even a small shift is worth noticing.

And if it still feels difficult, that’s okay too.

You don’t have to pressure yourself into kindness.

You may simply be noticing an opportunity to continue the work.

A Different Relationship With Yourself

Healing isn’t always about becoming a different person.

Often, it’s about developing a different relationship with yourself.

The challenges may not disappear overnight.

The difficult emotions may still arise.

Life will continue to bring uncertainty, mistakes, and setbacks.

But perhaps the way you meet those experiences can begin to change.

One choice at a time.

One moment at a time.

One small act of kindness at a time.

And perhaps that is where lasting change begins.

With care,

Caroline
